Chapter Twelve

Karl was doing well, and busy studying and practicing the mental exercises, so after lunch I put in more time on his enchantment, and I modified my secondary glamour enchantment on the necklace. The second part didn’t take all that much magic on my part. The enchantment was already mature, solid, and fully charged with magic, it was a simple matter of just changing the effects of that enchanted glamour.

It took me a little over two hours, which was even faster than I’d expected.

Then I dumped my phone, bought a new one, and sent texts to Cindy and Vic with my new number. The last thing I needed was the FBI tracking me on my cell phone, and then passing that information to the damned councils.

Then I bounced over to central park in Manhattan and did a little research with the help of Google search. I discovered the most ideal solution to solve the data and phone lack in my mound would be to enchant a cell tower, connect it magically to my mound so it would transmit there as well. Anyone connecting in my mound to a cell modem, tethered cellphone, or making a call would connect to that tower.

That best way was also impossible to work out, realistically on the logistics side of things. It’d take me a few days to make a firm connection and make the enchantment permanent, and while I could put Karl’s ring in my pocket to maintain the building enchantment between sessions, I couldn’t eat, sleep, or dawdle around a cell tower for three days, which would be necessary. Someone would notice.

So I went with a lesser solution, a cell phone data and voice repeater, which I picked up at Best Buy. They were used mainly for small businesses and homes that couldn’t get a good cell signal inside the building. The indoor antenna was a bit bulky being attached to the box, but I could enchant that to connect to my mound. Even that would be awkward to carry around, so I decided to hold off on enchanting it until I was done with the current mission.

Which was to get Karl’s enchantment done, have Cindy with us safe, and have the Vic and Abby situation worked out. Then I could afford to spend three days on it inside my mound incommunicado the whole time. In the meantime, I’d just have to pop out often enough to check for emergency messages, at least once an hour, but I still worried about it. At least I had a plan, and not much in life was perfect.

The problem with the plan was that I was fairly sure I’d need a repeater in every house, or maybe every few houses? It wouldn’t be strong enough to fill my whole mound. The second problem was finding a safe place to mount the antenna and plug in the equipment in the real world. The first problem might be fixable, if Muriel could enhance it further and expand the signal.
